But if one of the aftermaths of Andrew and Katrina are any indicator, states -- particularly Florida -- hard hit by Mathew will see a surge in state revenues. Sales and other taxes associated with rebuilding are going to soar.
And while too much of the actual sales revenue will go to out-of-state Big Box operations -- Home Depot, Lowe's, etc., -- some will stay home with local contractors and locally owned hardware stores. So there's a direct boost to the local economy, too.
Can only speak for Florida, but sure would like to see that money targeted for some overwhelming needs that have been ignored -- some by plan -- for years.
I would place an actually effective overhaul of the child-protection system at the top of the list, followed closely by an environment-protection effort that doesn't insult our intelligence.
But I suspect, given the track record of the chuckleheads in Tallahassee, it will probably result in yet even lower taxes for the corporations and the rich.
