Once again the memory of Margaret Chase Smith, a genuine Mainer hero, is invoked.
Please, don't insult the woman who stood up to Joe McCarthy.
Remember Snowe? Obama had the votes to enact a better version of his legacy health-care act but then he waited, in hopes of getting Snowe on board. Ted Kennedy died and then Snowe slammed the door in Obama's face. We ended up with a weakened Obamacare that will probably be dead in a few weeks.
Then when Snowe announced her retirement, we had to endure the hand wringing about this "conscientious" Republican who had grown sick of all the partisanship.
What a load. Snowe stepped down because she knew she couldn't win a primary with a challenge from a Tea Party candidate -- a candidate who was sure to hammer her with her husband's shabby for-profit college empire.
That company ended up being sued by the Obama administration and had to settle in a $95 million deal.
While Snowe took a victory lap showing up at numerous thank-you events honoring her, this supposed moderate spent her last days savaging Obama.
Partisanship? Think Snowe.
And Susan Collins is no moderate, either.
Remember when she voted for the massive tax cut for the rich? She claimed she did so because she was promised support for efforts to help save Obamacare.
That never materialized.
Also, there's her vote for Neil Gorsuch's appointment for the Supreme Court -- another one of those he-promised claims.
Then there's her leading role to get Jeff Sessions confirmed as Trump's attorney general. Yes, he's proven to be an irritant to Trump, but he's overseen a wholesale assault on basic accepted norms, including those that for decades guided criminal justice and immigration policies.
Remember, this is the guy who gave us baby prisons.
And now, there's another he-promised claim from Collins on Kavanaugh.
She pretends his promise that Roe v. Wade is precedent is valid, despite an email in which he clearly states that there is no such precedent.
Finally, for both Snowe and Collins, there is their silence on Maine's worse-than-Trump (and another "elected" without a majority -- twice) governor, Paul LePage.
Never a word of criticism for the worst governor in Maine's history.
I can't believe Collins is a dupe or stupid.
But a self-serving coward?
So please, spare me the moderate garbage.
