Having spent most of my life in Florida, I am quite knowledgeable of what a doofus is our US senator, Marco Rubio.
An ethically challenged doofus at that.
And following his meltdown in the face of the Trump juggernaut, most had written him off, particularly since he said he not only wasn't going seek reelection to the Senate, but really didn't like that job.
So, of course, right on the filing deadline, Rubio discovers he wants to continue being a senator.
It's Florida, you know.
But since then, Rubio has been a surprising voice of moderation against the early euphoria of Republicans over the Trump victory.
It made him -- and this is difficult to say -- look downright mature and wise.
It continued this week during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, when Rubio revealed he has been the target of Russian hacking from the primaries to today.
Who knows what 2020 will bring. I've learned to bet against conventional wisdom. (Just one example: Who would have thought that, right after the US victory in the first Gulf war, President George H.W. Bush would be defeated?)
Maybe Trump will somehow survive and even be a credible candidate in 2020.
I'll agree it's hard to imagine, but who knows?
But whatever the future brings, Marco Rubio continues to look more and more like a viable alternative for Republicans to Orange Julius.
