Reminds me of when Maine Republican Olympia Snowe was likewise hailed as the "voice of reason" when she retired from the U.S. Senate, citing her supposed weariness of partisanship. Again, the press ate it up, ignoring the real reason: Her husband's private-college operation was being sued by the feds (they ended up paying an $80 million fine) and she would have been destroyed in the primary by a Tea Party candidate.
And as for her moderation? She spent the rest of 2012 attending appreciation dinners where she continually attacked Obama.
